This business first opened its doors for business around 1999. The current owner acquired the business last year. At the time he acquired the business, it was under-performing. The previous owner had been running it mostly absentee. They had very few dealer detail accounts & were almost exclusively relying on Groupon for advertising. The plan was to increase sales and cash flow by making some incremental changes to the way the business operates.

The hand car wash is located right in the heart of the NW Suburbs with over 12,500 cars driving by the front door each day. Directly behind the hand car wash is another busy street, with an additional 18,900 cars driving by each day. The business is currently managed by a full-time manager.

The current owner acquired this business because he was very confident it had a lot of potential for growth. He was absolutely correct. When you review the financials, you'll see that ever since he took over, the sales have been increasing each month, along with the cash flow. One of the first things he did to increase sales was to pick up new detail accounts from car dealers in the area. They also increased the prices (per vehicle) on the dealer accounts. Other recent improvements to the business include; remodeling the lobby/waiting area and bathroom, registering the business with the Better Business Bureau, new procedures for washing and detailing automobiles, new car wash & detail packages, updated menu board for services & packages, new electronic gift cards, new signage & posters, new landscaping, a new prepaid car wash package and they now offer a new portable under carriage wash option. They also did some things to help reduce expenses. The car wash used to have a service that cleaned their towels for them. They now have their own towels and clean the towels themselves, in order to save on the towel expenses going forward.

Although they have made quite a few changes, there are still more changes that can be made to further increase sales. One such change is that they are only open until 6pm each day. Staying open later will help increase sales. Also, they are only open from 9am-4pm on Sundays. Opening a little earlier and staying open a little later will also help increase sales. Another way to increase sales is the fact that the owner has stated that it's time for a price increase, as they have never increased their prices since the previous owners bought the business 6 years ago. This is a good opportunity for a new owner to increase sales.

Another area of opportunity for a new owner/operator is to update the website with before & after pictures of some of the cars they have detailed, along with their new packages & specials. They currently only offer one special/coupon on the website, an early bird special. They really don't do much advertising at all. They only currently advertise via Groupon. Groupon does quite well for them however, many car washes also have specials like "Ladies Day" & special discounts off of full details during slow times of the year. They aren't sending mailers or coupons to the surrounding homes & businesses either. This would certainly help increase sales. Another great way to increase sales would be to offer pick up & delivery services for people working in the area. You could offer to pick up a vehicle while the customer is working & detail it & then drop it back off to them before the end of the day. They don't have to leave their office & they go to work with a dirty car & come home with a spotless like-new vehicle. Other areas of opportunity include; better lighting for the exterior signage, making the business more visible from the street. You might even look at some cross promotions with nearby restaurants where customers can either grab a bite to eat while having their car detailed, or you can offer a discount and/or coupon to customers of the nearby food establishments letting their customers know your hand car wash is right across the street.

This car wash is currently on Facebook and they have a mailing list with approximately 500 customers on the list. As you can see, this is a great business with the potential to increase sales even further, without spending a lot of money. Just a few minor changes could make a world of difference.
